The history of the last name Igoe

The surname Igoe originated in Ireland, where it first appeared in records as early as the 16th century. It is an Anglicized form of the Irish Gaelic name Ó hIógáin, derived from the old Irish word ióg meaning "ivy" or "ingó" meaning "a youth or servant."

The earliest known bearer of the name was Brian Oge (1585-1650), a notable Irish chieftain and leader during the Irish Confederate Wars. He was referred to in contemporary records as "Brian Oge of Oultorna" and "Brian Oge O'Higgin."

Another early figure of note was Edmond Igoe (1627-1693), an Irish soldier who fought for the Irish Confederates during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. He later served in the Spanish Army after the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland.
