It is thought to be a variant spelling of the more common name Jones, which itself is derived from the personal name John. The earliest recorded instances of the Jines spelling date back to the 13th century in parish records from the county of Yorkshire.

One of the earliest known bearers of the Jines name was Sir Robert Jines, a knight who fought alongside King Edward III in the Battle of Crécy during the Hundred Years' War in 1346. Records show he was granted lands in Lincolnshire for his service. The name can also be found in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as "Gines" in entries from Warwickshire and Gloucestershire.
