The surname Kitterman is of German origin, originating in the late 14th century. It is derived from the Old German words "kitz" meaning "kid" or "young goat" and "mann" meaning "man". The name likely referred to a person who worked with or raised goats.
The earliest recorded spelling of the name appears to be Kitzerman in a document from the town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Bavaria, dated 1397. Variations of the spelling included Kitzermann, Kitzerman, and Kittermann.
One of the earliest known bearers of the name was Hans Kitzerman, a farmer and goatherd who lived in the village of Neusitz, near Rothenburg, in the early 15th century. His son, Peter Kitzerman (c.1420-1487), was a successful merchant and landowner in the same region.
In the 16th century, the Kitterman family had spread to other parts of Germany, with records showing a Johannes Kitterman (c.1525-1592) who was a Lutheran minister in the town of Zwickau in Saxony. His grandson, Christoph Kitterman (1573-1638), was a noted scholar and author of several theological works.
Another notable bearer of the name was Johann Kitterman (1640-1718), a military officer who served in the armies of the Holy Roman Empire during the latter stages of the Thirty Years' War. He was awarded a knighthood for his bravery in battle.
In the 18th century, a branch of the Kitterman family settled in the Palatinate region of southwest Germany. One member of this branch, Friedrich Kitterman (1725-1802), emigrated to America in 1752 and established a farm in Pennsylvania. His descendants continued to use the Kitterman spelling.
