The name KOIDE is derived from the Japanese words "koi" meaning "carp" and "de" meaning "entrance" or "approach." It is thought to have been a locational surname given to those who lived near a carp-filled body of water or a place where carp were often found.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the KOIDE surname can be found in the Azuma Kagami, a historical chronicle of the Kamakura shogunate, which mentions a samurai named KOIDE Masamune who served under the Hojo clan in the 13th century.
