The history of the last name Konno

The surname KONNO is of Japanese origin. It is believed to have originated in the Kyushu region of Japan during the Kamakura period (1185-1333). The name KONNO is thought to be derived from the Japanese words "kon" meaning "root" or "stem" and "no" meaning "of" or "from", suggesting that the name may have referred to a family or clan whose ancestry was deeply rooted in a particular area.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the KONNO surname can be found in the Azuma Kagami, a historical chronicle of the Kamakura shogunate, where it mentions a samurai named KONNO Michitada who served under the shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo in the late 12th century.

During the Muromachi period (1336-1573), the KONNO clan was based in the Hizen Province (present-day Saga Prefecture) and played a significant role in the regional power struggles of the time. A notable figure from this era was KONNO Michisada, a samurai and daimyo (feudal lord) who fought against the powerful Ōuchi clan in the early 16th century.

In the Edo period (1603-1868), the KONNO family served as retainers to the Nabeshima clan, who were the daimyo of the Saga Domain. One prominent member was KONNO Motohiro (1677-1742), a scholar and poet who authored several works on literature and poetry.

Another noteworthy figure was KONNO Torazō (1801-1859), a farmer and activist who played a crucial role in the Saga Peasant Uprising of 1858-1859, a significant event in the lead-up to the Meiji Restoration.

In more recent times, KONNO Noboru (1888-1973) was a Japanese politician and diplomat who served as the Foreign Minister of Japan from 1938 to 1940, during the turbulent period leading up to World War II.

It's important to note that while the KONNO surname has deep historical roots in Japan, it has also spread to other parts of the world due to migration and cultural exchange, with individuals bearing this name found in various countries and regions.
