The history of the last name Kresh

The surname KRESH is believed to have originated in Germany during the late 13th century. It is thought to be derived from the Old High German word "kreish" which referred to a circular or rounded area, often associated with a village or small town. This suggests that the name may have initially identified someone who lived in or near a circular settlement.

One of the earliest recorded references to the name can be found in the Würzburg Codex, a medieval manuscript dating back to around 1300. It mentions a "Conrad Kreish" who was a landowner in the Franconian region of what is now modern-day Bavaria.

By the 15th century, variations of the spelling had emerged, such as "Kresch" and "Kreysch", as evidenced by records from the city of Nuremberg. These documents also indicate that the name was particularly prevalent in the areas around Bamberg and Würzburg, further supporting its origins in Franconia.

During the 16th century, the name made its way into other parts of Germany, as well as neighboring regions. Notably, a "Johann Kresh" was a prominent merchant in the city of Cologne in the 1550s, trading in goods from the Rhineland.

The earliest known person with the surname KRESH outside of Germany was a "Hans Kresh", born in 1602 in the town of Schaffhausen, Switzerland. He was a skilled clockmaker whose work was highly sought after throughout Europe.

Another noteworthy individual was the Prussian mathematician and astronomer, Johann Theodor Kresh, born in 1720 in Königsberg (now Kaliningrad, Russia). He made significant contributions to the study of celestial mechanics and the calculation of planetary orbits.

As the centuries progressed, the name continued to spread across Europe, with individuals bearing the KRESH surname appearing in various records and historical accounts. For instance, the Dutch painter, Willem Kresh (1801-1868), was known for his landscape and genre paintings depicting scenes of daily life in the Netherlands.

While not as common as some other surnames, KRESH has left its mark on history, with individuals from various walks of life carrying this name across multiple countries and centuries.
