This surname was likely given to individuals who worked as basket weavers or traders of baskets and other woven goods.

In the late 15th century, the name KROB appeared in the Liber Vetustissimus, an ancient manuscript containing records of land ownership and property transactions in the region of Bohemia, which was then part of the Kingdom of Bohemia within the Holy Roman Empire.

During the 17th century, the KROB family expanded their trade and settled in various parts of Bohemia and Moravia. Notable figures from this period include Frantisek KROB (1624-1692), a successful merchant who traded in woven goods and textiles, and Katerina KROB (1658-1721), a skilled basket weaver whose work was highly sought after by the nobility.

In the 19th century, the KROB surname gained prominence with the birth of Antonin KROB (1824-1891), a respected scholar and linguist who published numerous works on the Czech language and its origins.
