It is believed to be derived from the Basque words "lau," meaning four, and "zirika," which can be translated to mean prick or jab, possibly referring to a four-pronged farming tool or weapon.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name appears in a 1256 census record from the village of Elizondo in Navarre, Spain, where a farmer named Martin Laucirica is listed as a landowner.
