The history of the last name Longberry

The surname Longberry originated in England during the late medieval period, likely in the 13th or 14th century. The name is derived from a geographic location, likely a small village or hamlet now lost to history. It is a compound of the Old English words "lang" meaning long and "bury" meaning a fortified town or settlement.

One of the earliest known records of the name is found in the Court Rolls of the Manor of Wakefield in Yorkshire, dated 1315, which mentions a John de Longebury. The name also appears in various other legal and tax records from Yorkshire and Lancashire throughout the 14th and 15th centuries, often spelled as Longebury, Longbury, or Longberye.

During the Tudor period, the name began to take on its more modern spelling of Longberry. In 1543, a William Longberry is recorded in the Parish Registers of St. Mary's Church in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire. Another early bearer of the name was John Longberry, who was born around 1560 in Cheshire and served as a soldier in the English Civil War.

In the 17th century, the name spread beyond its northern English origins. A notable figure was Robert Longberry (1629-1704), a wealthy merchant and landowner from Gloucestershire who served as Sheriff of Bristol in 1691. His grandson, also named Robert Longberry (1670-1738), was a noted botanist and horticulturist who helped establish the Royal Society's gardens in London.

The 18th century saw the Longberry name continue to flourish, with several members achieving notable positions. James Longberry (1715-1792) was a successful barrister and judge in London, while his cousin, Thomas Longberry (1720-1798), served as a Captain in the Royal Navy and fought in the Seven Years' War.

In the 19th century, the Longberry family maintained a presence in various parts of England and Wales. One notable figure was Reverend William Longberry (1810-1887), a clergyman and scholar who served as the Headmaster of Shrewsbury School and published several works on classical literature.

While not an exhaustive list, these individuals represent some of the more prominent bearers of the Longberry surname throughout its long history in England and Wales, a name that has endured for over 700 years since its origins in the medieval period.
