The surname "LOYLESS" originated in England during the 12th century. It is believed to have derived from the Old English words "leof" meaning "dear" or "beloved" and "laes" meaning "pasture" or "meadow". This suggests the name may have initially referred to someone who lived near or worked on a beloved or dear meadow.

One of the earliest recorded instances of this surname can be found in the Pipe Rolls of Gloucestershire from 1190, where a Thomas Loyless is listed as a landowner. The name also appears in various medieval charters and records from the counties of Somerset, Devon, and Dorset during the 13th and 14th centuries, sometimes spelled as "Lovelesse" or "Lovelysse".

In the late 14th century, a John Loyless from Somerset is mentioned in the Lay Subsidy Rolls as a taxpayer. Around the same time, a William Loyless from Devon is recorded as a witness in a land transaction in the Feet of Fines for 1397.

During the 16th century, the name appears in the parish records of several villages in Wiltshire and Somerset, such as John Loyless (born 1524) from Mere, and Richard Loyless (born 1567) from Westbury.

One notable figure with this surname was Sir Roger Loyless (1578-1640), a Member of Parliament for Bath during the reign of King Charles I. He was involved in the English Civil War and supported the Royalist cause.

Another individual of note was Elizabeth Loyless (1654-1718), a prominent Quaker minister from Bristol who traveled extensively preaching and writing about her religious beliefs.

In the 18th century, Joseph Loyless (1723-1796) was a successful merchant and landowner in Somerset, leaving a substantial estate upon his death.

While not as common today, the surname Loyless can still be found in certain areas of southwestern England, particularly in the counties of Somerset, Dorset, and Devon, where it has its deepest historical roots.
