The history of the last name Manix

The surname Manix has its origins in the Brittany region of northwestern France, dating back to the early medieval period. It is believed to be derived from the Breton word "manach," meaning "monk" or "friar," suggesting that the name may have been originally borne by someone associated with a monastic order.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name Manix can be found in the Cartulaire de Redon, a compilation of charters and documents from the Abbey of Redon in Brittany, dating back to the 9th century. The name is mentioned in connection with land grants and property transactions, indicating its presence in the region during that time.

In the 11th century, a certain Hervé Manix was recorded as a landowner in the village of Plougonven, near the town of Morlaix in Brittany. This early reference provides further evidence of the name's deep roots in the region.

During the 13th century, a branch of the Manix family settled in the neighboring region of Normandy, where they became prominent landowners and nobles. In 1289, a knight named Raoul Manix is mentioned in a charter as holding lands in the vicinity of Caen.

Another notable figure bearing the surname Manix was Jean Manix, a 15th-century sailor and explorer from the port town of Saint-Malo in Brittany. He is believed to have accompanied the famous navigator Jacques Cartier on his voyages to the New World in the 1530s.

In the 17th century, the Manix family produced a notable member in the form of Pierre Manix, a Breton lawyer and magistrate who served as a judge in the Parlement de Bretagne, the sovereign court of Brittany, from 1645 to 1671.

As the name spread throughout France and beyond, it underwent various spelling variations, including Manix, Manyx, Manicks, and Mannix. However, the original Breton spelling of Manix remained the most common form.
