The history of the last name McTizic

The surname MCTIZIC is of Scottish origin and dates back to the 16th century. It is believed to have originated in the Highlands region, specifically around the area of Inverness-shire. The name is derived from the Gaelic words "mac" meaning "son of" and "tizic" which was an old Scottish occupational surname for a blacksmith or metalworker.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name MCTIZIC can be found in the Scottish Record of Deeds from 1587, where a Iain MCTIZIC is listed as a blacksmith in the village of Drumnadrochit near Loch Ness. The name also appears in several parish records from the late 16th and early 17th centuries in the surrounding areas of Inverness-shire and Ross-shire.

In the 17th century, the MCTIZIC name was associated with the clan MacDonald of Clanranald, one of the largest and most powerful Scottish clans at the time. A Robert MCTIZIC is recorded as being a renowned swordsmith who crafted weapons for the clan during the Scottish Civil War in the 1640s.

During the 18th century, the name MCTIZIC began to spread beyond the Highlands as members of the family migrated to other parts of Scotland and England in search of work. A notable figure from this period was James MCTIZIC (1734-1815), a skilled blacksmith from Aberdeen who was commissioned to create ornate ironwork for several prominent buildings, including the gates of Edinburgh Castle.

As the industrial revolution took hold in the 19th century, many MCTIZIC families found employment in the growing metalworking and mining industries. One such individual was William MCTIZIC (1822-1897), a mine engineer from Glasgow who was instrumental in the development of safer mining techniques and equipment.

Another noteworthy MCTIZIC was Eliza MCTIZIC (1860-1938), an early women's rights activist from Dundee who campaigned for better working conditions and suffrage for Scottish women in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

While the MCTIZIC name is not as common today as it once was, it remains a proud part of Scottish heritage, with its roots firmly planted in the ancient traditions of the Highlands and the skilled craftsmanship of its metalworking ancestors.
