The history of the last name Michon

The surname Michon originated in France during medieval times. It is believed to have derived from the Old French personal name Michel, which itself came from the Hebrew name Michael, meaning "who is like God?" This name was extremely popular throughout Europe during the Middle Ages due to the reverence for the archangel Michael.

Michon was initially a diminutive form of Michel, with the addition of the suffix "-on" indicating smallness or affection. This type of nickname formation was common practice in France, particularly in the northern regions where the surname first emerged. Similar spellings like Michau and Michault were also recorded.

One of the earliest known references to this surname can be found in the Cartulaire de Marmoutier, a medieval manuscript from the Abbey of Marmoutier near Tours, France. This document, dating back to the 11th century, mentions a certain Hubertus Michon as a witness to a land transaction.

In the 13th century, records show a Guillelmus Michon owning property in the village of Boissy-sous-Saint-Yon, located in the Île-de-France region. This area, along with neighboring Normandy and Picardy, are believed to be the initial strongholds of the Michon family name.

One of the earliest known bearers of this surname was Jean Michon, a French soldier who fought in the Hundred Years' War against the English. Born around 1380 in Meaux, he is mentioned in chronicles for his bravery at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415.

Another notable figure was Pierre Michon, a 15th-century poet and scholar from Burgundy. His most famous work, "Le Doctrinal de Court," was a popular instructional poem on courtly manners and etiquette.

In the 16th century, Jacques Michon was a renowned architect from Paris who worked on several prestigious projects, including the construction of the Château de Fontainebleau for King Francis I.

During the 17th century, the Michon name spread further throughout France, particularly in the central and western regions. Étienne Michon, born in 1628 in Anjou, was a prominent magistrate and judge who served in the Parlement of Paris.
