The surname Minett originated in England during the late medieval period. It is believed to have derived from the Old French word "minette," which referred to a small mine or quarry. This suggests that the name may have been initially given to someone who lived near or worked in a small mining operation.

The earliest recorded instances of the surname Minett can be found in various English records from the 13th and 14th centuries. In the Hundred Rolls of 1273, there is a mention of a person named William Minett residing in Oxfordshire. The Subsidy Rolls of 1327 also list a Robert Minett living in Somerset.
