The surname Nalepa originated in Poland. It is derived from the Old Polish word "nalep" meaning "patch" or "graft." This suggests the name may have originally referred to someone who worked as a grafter of plants or trees.

In the 14th century, there are records of the name being spelled "Nalepka" in the village of Nalepa near Krakow. This places the origin of the name around this region of southern Poland during medieval times.

Some of the earliest documented examples of the surname include Stanislaw Nalepa born around 1420 in the town of Biecz, and Jan Nalepa born in 1503 in Nowy Sacz. Both were landowners and farmers.

The name Nalepa is also found in some Polish nobility records from the 16th century. For example, Tomasz Nalepa is listed as a noble landowner in 1587 in the village of Gromnik near Krakow.
