The surname NEKOBA is believed to have originated in the northern regions of Japan during the Kamakura period (1185-1333 CE). It is thought to derive from the Old Japanese words "ne" meaning "root" or "origin" and "koba" meaning "small valley" or "hollow".

Some of the earliest recorded instances of the NEKOBA surname can be found in medieval Japanese census records and land ownership documents from the 13th century. During this time, the name was often spelled as "Nekohba" or "Nekouba", reflecting the variations in regional dialects.
