The surname Nishiguchi originates from Japan and dates back to the 8th century CE. It is derived from the Japanese words "nishi" meaning west and "guchi" meaning entrance or gate, likely referring to someone living near the west gate of a town or village.

The name first appeared in historical records from the Heian period (794-1185 CE), when many Japanese surnames began to emerge. Early variations of the spelling included Nishikuchi and Nishiguti. During this time, the name was concentrated in the western regions of Japan, particularly in the areas around modern-day Kyoto and Osaka.

One of the earliest recorded individuals with this surname was Nishiguchi Masatsune, a samurai warrior who lived in the late 12th century and fought in the Genpei War between the Minamoto and Taira clans. His bravery and loyalty were celebrated in contemporary accounts of the conflict.

In the 16th century, a prominent Nishiguchi family emerged as wealthy merchants and landowners in the Ise Province (now part of Mie Prefecture). A notable member was Nishiguchi Yoshinao (1534-1608), who served as a retainer to the powerful Tokugawa clan during the Sengoku period.

During the Edo period (1603-1868), the Nishiguchi name spread across Japan as the country experienced increased urbanization and mobility. Nishiguchi Toshiyuki (1687-1756) was a renowned Confucian scholar and educator who established a prestigious academy in Edo (now Tokyo).

In more recent history, Nishiguchi Haruzo (1863-1924) was a pioneering archaeologist and anthropologist who conducted groundbreaking research on the indigenous Ainu people of northern Japan. His work helped to preserve and document their unique culture and language.

Another notable figure was Nishiguchi Kunikida (1889-1944), a political activist and socialist leader who fought for workers' rights and social reforms in the early 20th century. He was arrested and imprisoned multiple times for his outspoken views and advocacy.
