It is derived from the Old French word "nollin," which means "small walnut tree" or "walnut orchard." The name likely originated as a descriptive name for someone who lived near or worked in a walnut grove.

One of the earliest records of the name can be found in the Cartulaire de l'abbaye de Saint-Bertin, a medieval manuscript from the Abbey of Saint-Bertin in Saint-Omer, dating back to 1144.
