The history of the last name Ooten

The surname Ooten is of English origin, emerging in the 13th century in the county of Kent. It is derived from the Old English word "oten," meaning oats. This suggests the name may have been an occupational name for a grower or seller of oats.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name can be found in the Hundred Rolls of Kent from 1273, where it appears as "Oten." The Hundred Rolls were administrative records of landowners in medieval England.

By the 14th century, the name had evolved into its more modern spelling of "Ooten." In the Poll Tax Returns of 1379, a Richard Ooten is listed as residing in the village of Boughton Monchelsea, Kent.

The Ooten name continued to be concentrated in Kent and the surrounding areas throughout the Middle Ages and into the modern era. One notable bearer was John Ooten (1535-1623), a wealthy landowner and Member of Parliament for Canterbury in the late 16th century.

In the 17th century, the name spread to other parts of England, including London. Thomas Ooten (1608-1685) was a successful merchant and member of the Worshipful Company of Mercers in the city.

As the British Empire expanded, the Ooten name traveled to various colonies and territories. William Ooten (1749-1819) was a British soldier who served in the American Revolutionary War and later settled in Upper Canada (modern-day Ontario).

Another prominent figure was Sir Charles Ooten (1810-1892), an English naval officer and explorer who led expeditions to the Arctic and Pacific regions in the mid-19th century.

In the 20th century, one of the most well-known bearers of the Ooten name was Reginald Ooten (1920-1995), a British writer and playwright whose works often explored themes of social class and identity.
