The history of the last name Pridgett

The surname Pridgett originates from England during the medieval period. It is believed to have derived from the Old English words "prid" meaning pride and "geat" meaning gate, possibly referring to someone who lived near a prominent gate or entrance to a town or village.

The earliest recorded spelling of the name is found in the Pipe Rolls of Norfolk from 1166, where it appears as Pridget. Similar spellings from that era include Pridgate and Pridgat. Over time, the name evolved into its modern form of Pridgett.

While the name does not appear in the renowned Domesday Book of 1086, it is mentioned in the Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire from 1273, where a Roger Pridgett is listed as a landowner in the village of Chatteris.

In the 14th century, a notable figure bearing this surname was Sir John Pridgett (1310-1378), a wealthy merchant and alderman in the City of London. He served as Sheriff of London in 1357 and was knighted for his services to the Crown.
