Rastatt itself is an old town, with its name first recorded in 786 AD as Rastatio. This Latin name is believed to have roots in the Germanic words "rastu" meaning "resting place" and "atti" meaning "ancestors" or "people." The area was a convenient stopping point along trade routes, lending itself to the "resting place" moniker.

One of the earliest known bearers of the Rastatter surname was Hans Rastatter, a merchant and citizen of Rastatt recorded in documents from 1512. Another early instance is Johann Rastatter, a Protestant pastor who lived in the late 16th century.
