The history of the last name Ricarte

The surname Ricarte originated in Spain. It is believed to have derived from the Spanish personal name Ricardo, meaning "brave power" or "powerful leader". The earliest known records of the name date back to the 12th century in the region of Catalonia.

During the Middle Ages, the Ricarte family was prominent in the city of Barcelona. Historical documents from the 13th century mention a noble knight named Ramon Ricarte who fought alongside King Jaume I in the Reconquista against the Moors. His bravery and military exploits earned him land and titles.

In the 15th century, the Ricartes established themselves in the town of Vilanova i la Geltrú, near Barcelona. They were involved in maritime trade and owned several ships. Juan Ricarte (1425-1492) was a respected merchant who traveled extensively throughout the Mediterranean.

As Spain expanded its colonial empire in the 16th century, some Ricartes ventured to the New World.
