The history of the last name Ruelos

The surname RUELOS originates from Spain, with its earliest known records dating back to the 12th century. It is derived from the Spanish word "ruelo," which means "a small wheel or roller." This suggests that the name may have originally referred to someone who worked with wheels or rollers, such as a miller or a cartwright.

In the medieval period, the name was primarily found in the regions of Aragon and Catalonia, where it was often spelled as "Ruellos" or "Ruello." One of the earliest recorded instances of the name is in a document from the Monastery of San Juan de la Peña in Aragon, dated 1152, which mentions a certain "Pedro Ruellos."

The name RUELOS does not appear to have been included in the famous Domesday Book, which was a survey of landowners in England commissioned by William the Conqueror in 1086. However, there are records of individuals with similar-sounding names, such as "Roellos" and "Ruellus," in other medieval manuscripts from the British Isles.

One of the earliest known bearers of the surname RUELOS was Juan Ruelos, a Spanish soldier who fought in the Reconquista, the centuries-long struggle to drive the Moors out of the Iberian Peninsula. He was born around 1280 in Zaragoza and participated in the capture of Gibraltar in 1309.

Another notable figure was Isabel Ruelos, a 15th-century Spanish nun and mystic who founded the Convent of Santa María de la Encarnación in Ávila. She was born in 1432 and is venerated as a beata (blessed) in the Catholic Church.

In the 16th century, a prominent member of the Ruelos family was Álvaro Ruelos, a Spanish explorer and navigator who accompanied Ferdinand Magellan on his famous circumnavigation of the globe. Álvaro was born in Seville in 1495 and served as Magellan's pilot during the voyage, which began in 1519.

During the 17th century, the name RUELOS gained some recognition in the arts, with the painter Juan Ruelos (1620-1675) from Valencia, whose works can be found in various churches and museums in Spain.

In the 18th century, there was a notable military figure named Francisco Ruelos (1725-1798), a Spanish general who fought in the American Revolutionary War as part of the Spanish forces that allied with the American colonists against the British.
