The surname RUIS has its origins in Spain, and can be traced back to the 12th century. It is believed to have derived from the Spanish word "río," which means river, and was likely used to denote someone who lived near a river or stream.

In the early 13th century, the name appears in the Cartulario de Oña, a collection of medieval charters and documents from the Monastery of Oña in the northern Spanish province of Burgos. One entry from 1214 mentions a man named "Rodrigo Ruiz," suggesting that the surname was already in use at that time.

As the name spread throughout Spain, variations in spelling emerged, including Ruys, Ruiz, and Ruíz. These different spellings were often used interchangeably, as spellings were not standardized until much later.
