The surname RUMOHR originated in the region of Schleswig-Holstein, in northern Germany. It derives from the Old Frisian words "rūm" meaning spacious or ample, and "ōr" meaning a bank or shore. This suggests the name likely referred to someone who lived near a wide riverbank or coastal area.
The earliest recorded spelling of the name appears in the Breviarium Sanctae Mariae Virginis, a 13th century Latin manuscript from the Duchy of Schleswig. Here it is rendered as "Rumohre". Over time, spellings evolved to Rumohr, Rumor, and Rumohre before settling on the modern Rumohr form.

In the 17th century, the name appears in church records from the village of Süderstapel, with the 1632 birth of Hinrich Rumohr. A century later, Carl Philipp Rumohr (1755-1843) was a noted jurist and writer who published works on art history and cuisine.
Other significant figures include the archaeologist Carl Rumohr (1785-1843), who conducted excavations in southern Italy, and Carl Friedrich Ferdinand Rumohr (1785-1843), a Prussian general who fought in the Napoleonic Wars.
