The history of the last name Siebel

The surname SIEBEL has its origins in Germany, dating back to the early medieval period. It is derived from the Old German word "sieben" meaning "seven," and was likely originally an occupational name for a person employed in some capacity related to the number seven, such as a tax collector or administrator.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name SIEBEL appears in the Codex Traditionum Corbeiensium, a 9th century cartulary from the Abbey of Corvey in present-day North Rhine-Westphalia. The name is spelled "Sibilo" in this document, likely reflecting an earlier spelling variation.

In the 12th century, a knight named Sigebelo von Siebel is mentioned in chronicles from the region of Saxony-Anhalt. This suggests that by this time, the name had also become associated with certain noble or landowning families.

During the 13th and 14th centuries, the SIEBEL name can be found in various records and documents from the towns and villages of central and eastern Germany, such as Erfurt, Leipzig, and Berlin. Some of these records list individuals with the surname variants Syebel, Siebell, and Sybel.

One notable bearer of the SIEBEL name was Johann Philipp Siebel, a 16th century Lutheran theologian and author born in Worms in 1512. He published several works on religious subjects during his lifetime and served as a court preacher to the Elector Palatine.

In the 18th century, a merchant and industrialist named Johann Siebel (1736-1807) established a successful textile manufacturing business in the city of Krefeld. His descendants continued to operate the family business for several generations.

Throughout the 19th century, as Germans began emigrating to other parts of the world in larger numbers, the SIEBEL surname spread to new regions. Some notable examples include the American politician and businessman Henry Siebel (1830-1907) and the French composer and organist Albert Siebel (1844-1915).
