The surname SINO is believed to have originated in Italy during the medieval period. It is derived from the Latin word 'sinus', which means 'curve' or 'bend'. This suggests that the name may have initially referred to someone who lived near a bend in a river or road.

The earliest recorded instances of the name date back to the 13th century in regions such as Tuscany and Umbria. In 1287, a document from the city of Perugia mentions a merchant named Giovanni SINO, who traded goods along the Tiber River.

By the 14th century, the name had spread to other parts of Italy, including the Veneto region. A notable figure from this era was Matteo SINO, a skilled architect who worked on several churches and palaces in Venice between 1340 and 1375.

In the 15th century, the SINO family gained prominence in the papal court in Rome. Cardinal Giovanni SINO (1421-1489) was a influential figure during the Renaissance, known for his patronage of the arts and his collection of ancient manuscripts.

As the Renaissance period progressed, the name began to appear in other parts of Europe as well. In Spain, a branch of the family settled in the region of Catalonia, where they adopted the spelling 'Sino'. One notable member was Pedro Sino (1542-1611), a successful merchant who established trade routes between Barcelona and the Mediterranean.

During the 17th century, the SINO name also reached the New World, as some members of the family emigrated to the Spanish colonies in the Americas. One of the earliest recorded instances is that of Diego SINO, who arrived in Mexico in 1628 and later became a prosperous landowner in the region now known as Chihuahua.

Other notable individuals with the surname SINO include the Italian mathematician and astronomer Giovanni Battista SINO (1589-1656), who made important contributions to the study of celestial mechanics, and the Spanish painter Francisco SINO (1712-1781), whose works were heavily influenced by the Baroque style.
