The history of the last name Sojda

The surname SOJDA is believed to have originated in the region of Silesia, which is now split between Poland and the Czech Republic. It likely derived from the old Slavic word 'soida', meaning a person who produces or sells honey. The earliest recorded instances of this surname date back to the late 15th century in village records from the area around Bielsko-Biała, Silesia.

One of the first documented bearers of the SOJDA name was Jan Sojda, a beekeeper who resided in the village of Bystra in the early 1500s. His son, Mikolaj Sojda, is mentioned in tax records from 1547 as owning a small farm and apiary in the same village.

In the 17th century, the spelling of the name evolved to include variants such as 'Soida' and 'Soyda', possibly due to regional dialect differences or scribal errors. A notable figure from this era was Tomasz Soyda (1621-1687), a respected priest and scholar who authored several religious texts.

The SOJDA surname spread beyond Silesia in the 18th and 19th centuries, with records showing families using this name settling in other parts of present-day Poland and the Czech Republic. One prominent individual was Franciszek Sojda (1786-1857), a Polish landowner and philanthropist who donated substantial funds towards the construction of schools and hospitals in his hometown of Bielsko.

Another significant bearer of the SOJDA name was Karolina Sojda (1845-1923), a celebrated Polish actress who performed in theaters across Europe during the late 19th century. She was particularly renowned for her portrayal of Shakespearean roles.

In more recent times, the surname SOJDA has maintained a presence in both Poland and the Czech Republic, though it remains relatively uncommon compared to some other Slavic surnames. Notable modern bearers include Józef Sojda (1904-1976), a Polish painter and sculptor, and Milena Sojdová (born 1958), a Czech writer and academic.
