The history of the last name Sufficool

The surname SUFFICOOL has its origins in the northern regions of England, particularly in the county of Yorkshire, where it first emerged during the late 12th century. The name is believed to be derived from the Old English words "sūffig," meaning "able or capable," and "cōl," signifying "cool" or "composed."

One of the earliest recorded instances of the SUFFICOOL name can be found in the Pipe Rolls of Yorkshire, a series of financial records maintained by the Exchequer during the reign of King Richard I, dated around 1189. These rolls document a certain Robert Sufficool, who held land and property in the village of Driffield.

During the 13th century, the SUFFICOOL family appears to have established themselves as minor gentry in the East Riding of Yorkshire. An entry in the Feet of Fines, legal records documenting the transfer of land ownership, from 1278 mentions a William Sufficool acquiring a parcel of land in the village of Kilham.

By the 14th century, the spelling of the name had evolved to its more modern form, as evidenced by the presence of a John Sufficool in the Poll Tax returns for the parish of Bempton in 1379. This John Sufficool is believed to have been a successful merchant, trading in wool and other goods across the North Sea.

One of the most notable figures bearing the SUFFICOOL name was Sir Thomas Sufficool (1542-1612), a respected lawyer and member of the Inner Temple in London. Sir Thomas served as the Recorder of York, a prestigious legal position, and was knighted by King James I in 1603 for his services to the Crown.

Another prominent individual was Captain William Sufficool (1687-1754), a celebrated naval officer who distinguished himself during the War of the Spanish Succession. Captain Sufficool's exploits at the Battle of Vigo Bay in 1702 earned him a reputation as a skilled and courageous commander.

In the literary world, the SUFFICOOL name is represented by the poet and playwright Elizabeth Sufficool (1734-1801), whose works were widely celebrated during the Romantic period. Her most famous work, "Odes to Nature," was published to critical acclaim in 1765.

As the SUFFICOOL family prospered and expanded, branches of the lineage established themselves in various parts of England, from Norfolk to Gloucestershire. However, the name's strongest roots remained in the Yorkshire region, where it continues to be associated with a rich history and heritage.
