The history of the last name Sumling

The surname SUMLING originated in the region of Somerset, England during the late 12th century. It is derived from the Old English words "sumor" meaning summer and "ling" meaning a heathland or meadow. This suggests the name may have referred to someone who lived near a summer pasture or meadowland.

One of the earliest known bearers of the name was Willelmus Sumling, recorded in the Pipe Rolls of Somerset in 1197. The Pipe Rolls were financial records maintained by the English Exchequer. This indicates the SUMLING surname was already established in Somerset by the late 12th century.

The SUMLING name appears in several other medieval records from Somerset, including the Assize Rolls of 1243 which mention a Robert Sumling. Local place names like Sumlingworth and Sumlingcombe may also be related to the surname's origins.

In the 15th century, a John Sumling was born around 1420 in Taunton, Somerset. He later served as a church warden in the nearby village of Bishops Lydeard from 1468 to 1472. Records show he had several children who carried on the SUMLING name.

Another notable bearer was Thomas Sumling, born in 1502 in Yeovil, Somerset. He was a wealthy wool merchant and landowner. His will from 1572 bequeaths property and assets to his wife Margery and children.

Moving into the 17th century, Richard Sumling (1612-1687) was a farmer and parish clerk in the village of Huish Episcopi, Somerset. His descendants continued living in the region for generations.

Other examples of the surname from historical records include William Sumling (born c.1670 in Chard, Somerset), Elizabeth Sumling (born 1721 in Sparkford, Somerset), and John Sumling (1785-1843) who served in the British Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars.

While centered in Somerset originally, the SUMLING name later spread to other parts of England over the centuries through migration and marriage. However, its core origins and earliest known bearers trace back to the medieval Somerset region.
