The history of the last name Surrette

The surname Surrette originated in France during the late medieval period. It is derived from the Old French word "surette" which means "little sister." This suggests the name was initially a nickname or descriptive surname given to the younger sister in a family.

The earliest recorded instances of the Surrette surname can be traced back to the Normandy region of northern France in the 13th century. Historical records show variations in spelling such as Surette, Surret, and Surrete during this time. It is believed the name spread to other areas of France and eventually to other parts of Europe as people migrated.

One notable early bearer of the Surrette name was Guillaume Surrete, a French soldier who fought in the Hundred Years' War between England and France in the 14th century. Records indicate he served under the command of Joan of Arc during the Siege of Orléans in 1429.

In the 17th century, the Surrette surname appeared in parish records from the Poitou-Charentes region of western France. A prominent individual was Pierre Surrette (1640-1712), a wealthy landowner and vintner from the village of Surgères. His descendants later emigrated to Acadia, which is now parts of eastern Canada.

During the French colonization of North America in the 18th century, several individuals with the Surrette surname settled in Acadia and Quebec. One of the earliest was Joseph Surrette (1705-1785), who lived in Grand-Pré, Nova Scotia and was among the Acadian settlers expelled by the British in 1755 during the Great Upheaval.

Another notable bearer of the Surrette name was Marie-Anne Surrette (1768-1854), a French-Canadian entrepreneur and pioneer from Quebec. She established successful trading posts and businesses in the early years of British settlement in Ontario.

As the Surrette family dispersed across North America and Europe over the centuries, the name underwent various spelling changes including Surrett, Surette, and Surrett. Despite these variations, the origins of the surname can be traced back to its medieval French roots.
