The surname TANOUYE originates from Japan and can be traced back to the late 17th century. It is believed to have derived from a combination of the Japanese words "ta" meaning rice field and "nouye" meaning a family or household. This suggests that the name may have originated from a family or community that was involved in rice cultivation.

One of the earliest known references to the TANOUYE surname can be found in the Edo period (1603-1868) records of the Tokugawa shogunate. During this era, the TANOUYE name appeared in several documents related to land ownership and tax records in the Kyushu region of Japan.

In the late 18th century, a prominent figure named TANOUYE Masashige (1715-1788) was a samurai and military strategist who served under the Shimazu clan in Satsuma (present-day Kagoshima Prefecture). He played a crucial role in the successful defense of Satsuma against the Tokugawa shogunate during the Satsuma Rebellion of 1787-1788.

Another notable individual with the TANOUYE surname was TANOUYE Keitoku (1802-1881), a Confucian scholar and educator who established one of the first modern schools in Japan, the Kangien Juku, in Edo (present-day Tokyo) in the early 19th century.
