The history of the last name Tatsumi

The surname TATSUMI is of Japanese origin, derived from the Kanji characters 竜 (tatsu) meaning "dragon" and 海 (umi) meaning "sea". It is believed to have originated in the late 8th century during the Nara period (710-794 AD) in Japan.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name TATSUMI can be found in the Shoku Nihongi, an early Japanese chronicle that covers the years 697-791 AD. The name appears as a reference to a local chieftain from the Satsuma region of Kyushu Island.
