The surname Teliz is thought to have originated in Spain, specifically in the Basque region or Navarra. It dates back to at least the 15th century and is derived from the Basque words "teli" meaning plain or flat area, and "iz" which means place or locality. Thus, Teliz likely referred to someone who lived on a plain or flat area of land.
One of the earliest known records of the Teliz name appears in the municipal archives of the town of Azagra in Navarra, from the year 1489. This document mentions a Juan Teliz who was a landowner in the area. The name is also found in 16th century church records from the Basque provinces of Vizcaya and Guipuzcoa.
In the 1600s, the Teliz surname spread beyond the Basque region as people migrated. It can be found in records from Aragon, Castile, and eventually made its way to Spanish colonies in the Americas. Early spellings included Telitz, Theliz, and Telliz.
One prominent bearer of this name was Pedro Teliz de Guzmán (1619-1693), a Spanish military officer who served as governor of the Province of Venezuela from 1681-1686. Another was María Josefa Teliz y Girón (1725-1798), a wealthy Chilean landowner descended from Spanish nobility.
In the 19th century, Teodoro Teliz (1832-1898) was a Mexican general who fought in the French Intervention in Mexico. And Francisco Teliz (1860-1918) was an Argentine lawyer, judge and politician who served as governor of San Juan Province.
Over time, the Teliz name dispersed through Spanish-speaking regions of Mexico, Central and South America, and even to the Philippines, carried by Spanish colonial settlers and immigrants from the Iberian peninsula.
