The surname THEETGE is believed to have originated in the Netherlands during the 17th century. It is likely derived from the Dutch word "teetge," which was a diminutive form of the name Tettje or Tette. These names were themselves derived from the Germanic root "thett," meaning "people" or "nation."
One of the earliest recorded instances of the THEETGE surname can be found in the Dutch municipal records of Amsterdam, where a certain Pieter Theetge is listed as a resident in 1632. The name also appears in the baptismal records of the Reformed Church of Leiden, where a child named Johannes Theetge was christened in 1654.
By the late 17th century, the THEETGE surname had spread to other parts of the Netherlands, as well as to the Dutch colonies in the East Indies (present-day Indonesia). In 1684, a man named Dirk Theetge is recorded as having served as a merchant and ship's captain for the Dutch East India Company in Batavia (modern-day Jakarta).
As the THEETGE family continued to expand and migrate, their name underwent various spelling variations. Some of these include Theitge, Thetge, and Teetje. One notable bearer of the name was Hendrik Theetge (1722-1801), a wealthy merchant and landowner from the Dutch town of Breda.
During the 19th century, members of the THEETGE family began to migrate to other parts of the world, including the United States and South Africa. One such individual was Johannes Theetge (1832-1912), who was born in Rotterdam but later settled in Cape Town, where he worked as a teacher and translator.
