The surname TOPASNA is believed to have originated in the region of Bohemia, which is now part of the Czech Republic, in the early 16th century. It is thought to have derived from the Old Czech word "topasný," meaning "to melt" or "to smelt," suggesting a possible connection to metalworking or mining professions.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name can be found in a 1532 land registry document from the town of Kutná Hora, which was known for its silver mining industry during that time period. The document refers to a certain Jakub Topasna, who was listed as a smelter employed by the local mining guild.

In the 17th century, the name appears in church records from the village of Nové Město nad Metují, where a family by the name of Topasna is mentioned as residing there from at least 1645 onwards. This village was known for its production of glassware, which may have been another industry associated with the surname's origins.

The earliest known bearer of the TOPASNA name was Jan Topasna, who was born in 1587 in the town of Jáchymov, which was a center of silver and tin mining during the Renaissance period. He is recorded as having worked as a smelter in the local mines.

Another notable figure was Vojtěch Topasna (1725-1802), a glassmaker from the town of Nový Bor, who is credited with developing a unique technique for producing colored glass vessels that became highly sought after by European nobility.

In the 19th century, the TOPASNA surname can be found in records from the city of Brno, where a family of that name was involved in the metalworking trade. One member, Josef Topasna (1845-1912), is said to have been a skilled blacksmith who crafted intricate ironwork for many of the city's churches and public buildings.
