The surname URBON originated in the region of Burgundy, France in the early medieval period. It is believed to be derived from the Old French word "urbain" meaning "urbane" or "courteous". This suggests that the name may have been initially bestowed as a nickname on someone who displayed polished manners or sophistication.
One of the earliest recorded instances of the surname appears in the Cartulaire de l'Abbaye de MolĂȘme, a 12th-century manuscript from the Burgundian abbey, where a certain Robertus Urbon is mentioned in 1154. This suggests the name had already been established in the region by that time.
The name seems to have spread throughout northern France in subsequent centuries. In the 13th century, a Jehan Urbon is recorded in the archives of the city of Reims. A century later, a Guillaume Urbon appears in the tax records of the town of Amiens in 1389.
By the late Middle Ages, variations of the spelling had emerged, such as Urbain and Urbain. These were likely influenced by the French word "urbain" itself, as well as the name of the prominent Saint Urban, a 4th-century martyr.
One of the earliest known bearers of the URBON surname was Jacques Urbon, a wool merchant from Dijon who lived from around 1420 to 1495. His grandson, Pierre Urbon (1472-1538), was a respected jurist and served as a judge in the Parlement of Burgundy.
In the 16th century, the name appeared in various parts of France. Notable figures included the poet and translator Michel Urbon (1508-1572) from Paris, and the sculptor Jean Urbon (1525-1592) from Troyes, known for his work on the city's cathedral.
As the name spread more widely across Europe in later centuries, it underwent further spelling variations, such as Urbohn, Urbon, and Urbonn, reflecting regional linguistic influences. By the 18th century, there were URBON families established in regions as far afield as the German Rhineland and the Low Countries.
