The surname UTRUP originated in the region of Westphalia, Germany during the Middle Ages. It is believed to derive from the Old German words "ut" meaning "out" and "rup" meaning "land" or "field", referring to someone who lived outside of a village or settlement.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name UTRUP can be found in the Werdener Urkundenbuch, a collection of medieval documents from the town of Werden in Westphalia, dated around 1250.
