The history of the last name Vanderlin

The surname VANDERLIN originated in the Netherlands during the 16th century. It is derived from the Dutch words "van der" meaning "from the" and "lin" which referred to a linden tree or lime tree. This suggests the name may have originated as a locational surname for someone who lived near a notable linden tree.

Early variations of the spelling included Vanderlinne, Vanderlinde, and Van der Linden. The name is found in some Dutch records from the 1500s, though there are no famous early bearers known. By the 1600s, the spelling had stabilized closer to the modern form.

One of the earliest recorded instances is Jan Vanderlin, born around 1620 in Amsterdam. He was a merchant involved in the Dutch East India Company's spice trade. Records show he made several voyages to Indonesia in the 1640s and 1650s.

Another early bearer was Pieter Vanderlin, a farmer from Friesland in the northern Netherlands born in 1632. Local church records from the 1670s mention him owning land near the village of Wommels.

In the 1700s, the VANDERLIN name spread more widely as Dutch immigrants settled in European colonies. Hendrick Vanderlin (1710-1785) was born in Utrecht but later moved to Cape Colony in South Africa, where he worked as a vintner.

A line of VANDERLINs can be traced to the German Palatinate region in the 1800s. Perhaps the most notable was Friedrich Vanderlin (1812-1891), a teacher and historian who wrote extensively about the Palatinate's history and culture.

Later in the 19th century, Franz Vanderlin (1852-1924) was an Austrian chemist. He did pioneering work on synthetic dyes and colorants, patenting several processes still used commercially today.
