The surname VANEPS finds its origins in the Netherlands, originating in the early 16th century. The name is believed to have derived from the Dutch words "van" meaning "from" and "eps" which was an old spelling of the modern Dutch word "epe" meaning a type of willow tree. One of the earliest recorded instances of the name can be found in the 1554 municipal records of the city of Leiden, where a certain Pieter VANEPS is mentioned as a tradesman. Another early reference is from the 1572 census of the town of Gorinchem, where the VANEPS family is listed among the residents.

In the 17th century, the name began to spread beyond the Netherlands. In 1632, a Joost VANEPS is recorded as having settled in the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam, which later became New York City.
