The history of the last name Vohs

The surname VOHS originated in Germany, tracing its roots back to the Middle Ages. It is believed to have derived from the Old German word "vogt," which referred to an official or administrative representative appointed by a lord or ruler. This suggests that the earliest bearers of the name may have held such positions of authority within their respective communities.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name VOHS can be found in the Codex Diplomaticus, a collection of medieval charters and documents compiled in the 13th century. The name appears as "Vogts" in a manuscript dated 1247, referring to a landowner in the region of Bavaria.

During the 14th century, variations of the name began to emerge, such as "Voghts" and "Voghtes," reflecting the linguistic evolution of the time. A notable figure from this era was Johann Voghts, a merchant and alderman in the city of Nuremberg, who lived between 1320 and 1387.

As the name spread across Germany, it often took on localized spellings or adaptations. In the 16th century, a branch of the family known as the Vohsen settled in the town of Wittenberg, where they established themselves as respected scholars and academics. One of their descendants, Andreas Vohsen (1564-1628), became a renowned professor of theology at the University of Wittenberg.

The 17th century saw the name VOHS appearing in various regions of Germany, including Saxony and Silesia. In 1642, a record in the church archives of Görlitz mentions a certain Hans Vohs, a prominent landowner and farmer.

A noteworthy figure from the 18th century was Johann Michael Vohs (1718-1783), a German composer and organist who served at the court of the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg. His compositions, including several masses and motets, were widely performed and admired during his lifetime.

As the name spread throughout Europe, it also found its way to other countries through emigration. In the 19th century, a branch of the VOHS family settled in the Netherlands, where they became known as the Vosses. One of the most famous Dutch bearers of this name was Abraham Vossius (1818-1901), a renowned classical scholar and philologist who taught at the University of Leiden.
