It is believed to be derived from the Old English words "wæsc" and "heal," meaning "washer" and "ridge" or "slope" respectively. One of the earliest recorded instances of the name VOSHELL can be found in the parish records of St. Mary's Church in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, where a John Voshell was mentioned in 1592.
