The history of the last name Voung

The surname "VOUNG" is believed to have originated in England during the medieval period. It is thought to be derived from the Old English word "fung," which meant "foam" or "froth." This suggests that the name may have been initially given as a descriptive nickname to someone who lived near a foamy river or stream.

In the Domesday Book of 1086, a record of landholders in England commissioned by William the Conqueror, there are several entries that appear to be early variations of the name VOUNG, such as "de Funge" and "atte Funge." These entries indicate that the name was already established in certain parts of the country by the late 11th century.

One of the earliest known bearers of the name was Sir John de Funge, a knight who fought in the Crusades in the late 12th century. Another notable figure was William Vounge, a merchant and alderman in the city of London, who lived during the reign of King Edward III (1312-1377).

During the 15th and 16th centuries, the name appears to have been concentrated in the counties of Devon and Somerset in southwest England. There are records of a family called Vounge living in the village of Taunton Deane, Somerset, during this period. One member of this family, Thomas Vounge (c. 1490-1560), was a prominent landowner and served as a justice of the peace.

In the 17th century, the spelling of the name began to evolve towards its modern form of VOUNG. One notable bearer was Sir Edward Voung (1617-1689), a naval officer who served during the Anglo-Dutch Wars and later became an admiral in the Royal Navy.

Other historical figures with the surname VOUNG include James Voung (1773-1835), a British explorer and naturalist who made significant contributions to the study of zoology and botany, and Mary Voung (1799-1868), a prominent advocate for women's education and social reform in England.
