The surname WEMPLE is of Dutch origin and can be traced back to the 17th century. It is believed to have originated from the Dutch town of Wemeldinge, located in the province of Zeeland. The name is derived from the Old Dutch word "wemel," meaning "to swarm or teem."

One of the earliest known references to the WEMPLE surname can be found in the records of the Dutch Reformed Church of New Amsterdam (present-day New York City) in the late 1600s. This suggests that some of the earliest WEMPLE settlers in the New World were Dutch colonists who arrived in the area that is now New York.
