The Nuttall surname most likely derives from one of two locations in England. It is therefore a locational name and was bestowed upon people who were born or lived in a certain location. In 1202 Richard de Nuttehal was mentioned in the Pipe Rolls of Nottinghamshire. This is likely the first recorded mention of this surname in use. It is likely that this Richard was from the Nuttall parish in Nottinghamshire.
